11/29/11 by Mari Silbey | Everyone wants in on the EPG business. That’s one of the conclusions I took away from the SCTE Cable Tec-Expo event earlier this month. Even as CE manufacturers are pumping up the volume on connected devices with their own video interfaces, vendors in the cable TV world are pushing a range of solutions that tie the electronic program guide into larger content management systems for pay-TV operators. I talked about Rovi’s TotalGuide EPG a couple weeks back, and there’s Arris’ Moxi guide, but those two are far from the only players in this game. Here’s a sample of three other companies touting their own guide solutions.

Behind every successful service provider is a great billing system. Responding to market changes with timely new offerings and then marketing these new offerings effectively requires a flexible, customizable billing system that lets service providers implement changes quickly and easily. When
Tullahoma Utilities Board (TUB), a municipal utility in Tennessee, added a telecommunications branch in 2007, a new billing system was a clear necessity. Dwight Miller, TUB’s administrative manager, says that although the utility already had billing software for its electricity, water and wastewater services, billing for triple-play communications services over fiber was far more complex.

The industry’s field technicians are working hard to keep up with the massive changes that the Internet and, subsequently, wireless technology have brought. One thing that would help, observes Garrick Russell, president of broadband billing and management provider Great Lakes Data Systems, is a better way to handle the information about all the devices in the home.
